Dating God

Intimacy has been stirring in my heart since mid-summer. I have been through a season that has left me dry and extremely busy, but last week I had an epiphanous moment. I was searching in hot pursuit to find something I had misplaced. In my searching, I came across a treasure chest of gold right from the Father’s heart. After about an hour of tears, I blurted out, “I miss you Daddy! I miss the raw, real moments of deep intimacy. My life seems to be getting in the way!

As I quieted my spirit, I had a thought dance across my mind, “I want to start dating God.” I want to crawl into His lap and just be! No speaking, no doing, just being!

If you take the romantic connotations away from the term “dating,” you are left with a word that can be applied to any experience of getting to know another on a deeper level. In a dating relationship, the big bonus in addition to the romance is a deep bond of intimacy. Intimacy is the experience of really knowing and being known by another person. It is not spatial but relational. We can feel close to someone who lives halfway around the world and completely distant from the person sitting right next to us.

With dating it’s about discovering each other’s desires, listening to each other speak, being present in the moment. Dating God takes us back to our first love and causes us to remember how passionate in love He has been with us before we even knew who He was.

God is wooing me in this season to get back to my first love, my deep, uncomplicated, organic relationship with Him. He is calling me to “date” Him.

Are you so busy “doing for God” that you aren’t enjoying the blessing of His presence in your life? Don’t confuse busyness with being spiritually productive.

When is the last time you truly experienced the presence of God? Look at your schedule today and see if you need to slow down a little bit and rest at His feet.

Maybe He is beckoning you to entering into a Dating Relationship with Him?

Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life. Philippians 4:6 (TPT)
